Working on exterior views

Spatial planning and floor plans

Spatial planning, having the building asend the cliff would provide the best views of the site and create stability for the building

First sketches for the floor plan. working out spaces and entry points for the building. How do people travel through the spaces?

Floor plans progressing.

First ideas for building diagram. working on the idea of the cycle for recycling to create three unique spaces.

Working on better ways to display this concept. How to incorporate a need for environmental conservation

Context - library placement

The library will be placed amongst the cliff - to provide a good contrast between the open and enclosed spaces.

Library Focus

The following chart shows what my library will display and what i hope the outcome will be.

Library Focus

The library is to display discarded objects and artificial nature. Things that have been thrown away and are polluting our environment but could be used to create new and exciting objects. ie plastic bottle light fittings etc.
As a contrast i want some spaces to display forms of artificial nature to make the public appreciate their surroundings

The concept for my design focuses on the effect of the natural
and how this can change the experience within each of the spaces.

Concept and Library Focus

This chart shows what aspects i wanted to take from the folie into project 2, from this i was able to decide on a focus for my library.

Further Concept Development

My folie focus was - bringing community together and also educating on sustainable living.

From this I want to develop a 'Library of Conceptual Design; artificial nature and architectural development'

The library will display the following:

- research papers on sustainable design
- some books on projects completed in the past
- a MAJOR focus on a gallery of student conceptual projects focusng on improving sustainable development and living. (in relation to relevant issues in Brisbane eg. flooding)
- features of the building will also continue to encourage sustainable design

I want to include a gallery/display space within the library to encourage people to interact with the information provided in a more open and casual setting.

Project Site

Decided to place my library along the River. This image shows where i want the library to be sited. (somewhere within the red shaded area - dependant on final design)

Initial Project Two Thoughts

Developing an idea for a private library at Howard Smith Wharfs

I've decided to focus on the river component of the site, so my design will need to achknowledge this.
Theme Development: The folie focused on sustainable development and community involvement. To continue on this idea i will be proposing a library of student works (primarily design projects) to encourage student involvement and community interaction. The building will also be promoting sustainable design and awareness of the natural environment by integrating the building with its surroundings.

possible library focus???

- Library of Brisbane Design History and Student works
- Community involvement in the development of Brisbane Culture

?? these ideas and concepts will be looked at further.

Final Folie Design

        Final Folie Design

Sustainability is a pressing issue that is continually becoming more recognised as an important element in the guarantee of our future. The media continually addresses the future issues of the world; however they do not promote actions that can be undertaken by the general public in helping establish sustainable practice. The Civic Garden is a self-sustaining structure that promotes sustainability through its vision and interaction. The vegetable garden encourages communal gardening for those in the local area by providing individual compartments for each community member. Essentially users will learn how they can make a change for the future and how to work together as a community for one goal.

Aquaculture - a self sustaining floating city

In this example the floating city is self sufficient, power is provided through water current, wind and aquaculture. The aim of our folie is to educate the user of the possibility of the self sustaining city; to encourage people to live more sustainably and become more environmentally aware.

Tutorial week 2 - the next step

The team plans to investigate the idea of aqua culture further, developing ideas for form and making a start on the initial design concept. A site visit needs to be done to find the best possible position for the folie. Look into who visits the site? Who uses the site? What are the surrounding areas?

Tutorial week 2 - brainstorming

First tutorial of the semester involved meeting all team members and beginning to discuss ideas about the folie design. Some of the ideas brought up were: - the idea of gravity and force - the possibility of using square shapes to create interesting forms - the idea of a self sustaining environment, looking into the concept of aqua culture. Teaching viewers about the concept of sustainability.
